Episode 75 - Fascia, Hormones & the Quantum Body with Dr. Catherine Clinton
What if the missing link in hormone health isn't another supplement, but the light in your bedroom & the water you drink? Dr. Catherine Clinton, a naturopathic doctor & quantum biology expert, joined Iris to explore a foundation of health that most people, & most medical approaches, overlook entirely.
Dr. Clinton's path into quantum biology began with her own health crisis. After being diagnosed with autoimmune disease & Lyme disease during naturopathic school, she found that even a comprehensive toolkit of herbs, nutrition & conventional treatment wasn't enough to fully restore her health. That search led her to research on quantum effects in photosynthetic bacteria & mitochondria, work that would eventually earn a Nobel Prize in chronobiology, & to a new understanding of the body as more than chemical & mechanical.
This conversation covers how morning & evening light shape hormone secretion, why true hydration is about more than how much water you drink, the surprising differences between male & female fascia, & practical, often free, tools for supporting fertility & menstrual cycle health. As Dr. Clinton puts it, quantum biology isn't an alternative to biochemistry, it's the foundation that biochemistry sits on.

What Quantum Biology Actually Is
Quantum biology looks at quantum effects in living systems, specifically how light, water, sound, & fields of energy (electromagnetic, scalar, & the body's own biofield) influence structures like the mitochondria, fascia, cell membranes, DNA, & the nervous system.
"There's this step before chemistry, the body before chemistry, and that's where quantum biology comes in."
This isn't a replacement for biochemical approaches, it's the foundation underneath them. Dr. Clinton has repeatedly seen patients where a supplement or treatment they'd used for years suddenly started working, simply because the quantum biological foundation, proper light exposure, real hydration, was finally in place.
Morning Light & Hormone Signaling
One of the clearest, most practical takeaways from this conversation: the first light you expose your eyes to each morning sends a direct signal to your hormonal system.
For most people in modern life, that first light comes from a phone screen, rich in blue light, which tells the body it's already solar noon. This artificial signal spikes cortisol immediately, as the body scrambles to "catch up."
"If we go outside at, you know, within an hour, half an hour of waking, then the light in our environment is cuing so many different hormonal conversions in the body... the sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone, testosterone."
Natural morning light, particularly the red & infrared spectrum present at sunrise, produces a slow, gentle rise in cortisol instead. This gradual increase supports healthy hormonal secretion patterns, allowing the adrenal glands to properly convert pregnenolone into estrogen, progesterone, & testosterone. In 2017, three researchers won the Nobel Prize in chronobiology for demonstrating that nearly every cell in the body has its own circadian clock, work that underlies this entire process.
Evening Light, Melatonin & Fertility Signaling
Just as morning light matters, so does dimming light in the evening, & the fertility implications are significant.
As the sun sets, shifting to warmer, dimmer, orange-toned lighting (Dr. Clinton uses salt lamps throughout her home) signals to the body that darkness is approaching without blocking melatonin release from the pineal gland.
"If we can get to bed in between that 10pm to 2am time window, that's when insulin and leptin start docking in the hypothalamus. And when that happens, it tells the body, is this person rich enough in energy reserves to support a pregnancy?"
When melatonin is blocked by blue light from screens or overhead lighting, insulin & leptin can't properly signal to the brain that the body has sufficient energy reserves. Rather than risk supporting a pregnancy without confirmed energy availability, the body errs on the side of caution, a mechanism with real implications for anyone navigating fertility challenges.
Practical tools mentioned: blue light blocking glasses, switching away from LED lighting, blue-light-filtering phone & computer apps, & simple clip-on red/orange reading lights for evening use.
Bioelectric Health & the Body as an Antenna
Dr. Clinton frames the body as an antenna, constantly receiving information from its environment. Cells run on a negative electrical charge, & when that charge is lost, symptoms follow: inflammation, hormonal imbalance, pain, & disease states.
"Taking steps to maintain that electrical charge, or to boost it and replenish it, are such a powerful way to approach health."
This bioelectric framework connects directly to practices like grounding or earthing, where physical contact with the earth has been shown to produce measurable shifts in blood under microscopic examination, research that Iris noted is helping legitimize practices that might otherwise sound purely anecdotal.
Fascia: The Body's Communication Network
Fascia is often misunderstood as simple "packaging material" for muscles, but it's far more than that. This body-wide web of connective tissue, made primarily of collagen, connects every structure in the body, down to the cellular level, functioning as an intermediary between the nervous system, immune system, & hormonal system.
"Collagen is semiconductive, so it can hold an electrical charge and it can transmit it. It's also piezoelectric, so when compressed or exposed to pressure waves, it can create an electrical current."
Male vs. Female Fascia
The differences between male & female fascia are substantial. Female fascia contains estrogen receptors that respond directly to estrogen, keeping the tissue more elastic & springy. As estrogen declines during perimenopause & menopause, fascia can become stiffer, contributing to aches, pains, & reduced flexibility.
Male fascia, with naturally lower estrogen & fewer estrogen receptors, tends to be more rigid & rope-like by comparison. This relationship works both directions: healthy fascia responds more efficiently to hormonal signals, while unhealthy fascia amplifies the impact of hormonal decline.
Fascia is formed from the mesoderm during gestation, the same embryonic cell line as muscles, bones, & tendons, which explains its deep interconnection with these structures throughout life.
Fascia & the Menstrual Cycle
These hormone-fascia dynamics play out monthly, not just across life stages. Iris connected this directly to her own experience of increased stiffness during the luteal phase, when estrogen has dropped relative to progesterone, a pattern Dr. Clinton confirmed reflects the same bidirectional hormone-fascia relationship at a day-to-day level.
Rethinking Hydration: It's Not Just About Water Intake
One of the most practical reframes in this conversation: hydration isn't primarily about how much water you drink, but what that water does once it's in your body.
"Water in the body takes on many forms... when water comes in against a surface like fascia, it takes on a different organization, a different structure. And that water is so important for the ability for fascia to glide, to move."
This structured water plays a direct role in menstrual cycle symptoms, including PMS & pain during menstruation. A quantum biology approach to hydration includes:
- Mineralized water (even small amounts of minerals help water move into cells & stay absorbed, similar to basic osmosis)
- Energized water (created through sunlight exposure, added plant material like cucumber or lemon, or simply stirring)
- Movement & infrared exposure to help organize water into its more usable, structured form once consumed
On Electrolytes
Regarding the current wave of electrolyte products on social media, Dr. Clinton's guidance is refreshingly simple: some mineral content matters, but more isn't automatically better.
"A lot of those electrolyte packets can be overkill for some people... I've seen that cause issues with people with their thyroids."
Electrolyte needs are highly individual & geographically dependent. Dr. Clinton, based in the wetter Pacific Northwest, uses minimal seawater mineral additions to her daily water but reaches for full electrolyte formulations only when visiting drier climates like the desert Southwest, mirroring Iris's own practice of using simple sea salt & desert salt, reserving heavier electrolyte use for intense workouts.
The Foundation Beneath It All: Internal Coherence
When asked for her single non-negotiable practice, Dr. Clinton didn't point to light or water, she pointed inward.
"Before I even get out of bed, before I open my eyes, I start with a heart-centered practice where I'm focusing my intention on my heart, I'm breathing into that area, and I'm just very quickly having a gratitude practice."
This isn't hours of meditation, it's a few minutes of intentional grounding before the day begins. As a business owner, educator, physician, & homeschooling mother, Dr. Clinton's point is that accessible, brief practices can meaningfully shift internal coherence, & that thoughts & emotions themselves function as conductors of the body's overall energetic state.
The Bottom Line
The most striking part of this conversation is how accessible these tools actually are. Watching the sunrise, dimming overhead lights in the evening, adding a pinch of mineral salt to water, these aren't expensive protocols or complicated supplement stacks. They're free, or nearly free, & they address a foundation that most modern approaches to hormone health & fertility skip entirely.
What Dr. Clinton describes isn't a rejection of conventional or naturopathic medicine, it's an invitation to look one layer deeper. Before reaching for another supplement or treatment, quantum biology asks a different question: is the body's basic relationship with light, water, & energy intact? When that foundation is set, everything built on top of it, hormonal treatments, fertility support, fascia work, tends to work far better.
Modern life has pulled us out of relationship with the rising & setting of the sun, with structured water, with the ground beneath our feet. Returning to that relationship, even in small, consistent ways, may be one of the most powerful & underutilized tools available for hormone balance & fertility.
Key Takeaways
- Quantum biology looks at how light, water, sound & energy fields shape health, functioning as the foundation beneath biochemical processes rather than replacing them
- Morning light exposure within 30-60 minutes of waking triggers sex hormone conversion (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone) through a gentle, gradual cortisol rise
- Artificial blue light first thing in the morning spikes cortisol immediately, signaling false "solar noon" to the body
- Evening light exposure blocks melatonin, disrupting insulin & leptin signaling that tells the body whether it has enough energy reserves to support a pregnancy
- Fascia is a body-wide communication network, not just structural packaging, connecting the nervous, immune & hormonal systems through collagen's semiconductive & piezoelectric properties
- Female & male fascia respond differently to hormones, with estrogen keeping female fascia more elastic & its decline increasing stiffness
- True hydration depends on mineralized, structured water, not simply volume of water consumed
- Electrolyte needs are individual & climate-dependent, more isn't automatically better & can affect thyroid function
- A brief, heart-centered practice before rising can be as foundational to hormone health as light & hydration
